Then relief would come to Saul he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him” (1 Samuel 16:21–23). Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, ‘Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.’ Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. Saul called David to come and found him to be a great comfort: “David came to Saul and entered his service. One of the king’s servants referred David to the king, describing the youth as a great harp player, among other things (verse 18). He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better” (1 Samuel 16:15–16). Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre. When the king’s servants saw the torment Saul was enduring, they suggested, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. First Samuel 16 reveals the first step in this journey. The reader would be wondering how a shepherd boy would become king. This account is recorded immediately following David’s anointing as the future king of Israel. Second, the evil spirit was used to bring David into the life of Saul. Likely, Satan and the demons had always wanted to attack Saul God was now simply giving them permission to do so. Therefore, God removed His Spirit from Saul and allowed an evil spirit to torment him. Saul had directly disobeyed God on two occasions (1 Samuel 13:1–14 15:1–35). It is likely that this evil spirit was part of God’s judgment upon Saul for his disobedience. Ultimately, all created things are under God’s control. Why did God let an evil spirit torment Saul? Even when we want to catch thoughts of those we love most we cannot do so, how much less can other people succeed in penetrating our minds. Also, in a letter to an individual believer, written on behalf of the Guardian on 18 January 1951, it is stated: 'You should not be afraid any one can affect your mind. How much less have they after they are dead. Good is stronger than evil and even when alive they had very little power. One of the Bahá’í pilgrims from the West who asked ‘Abdu’l-Bahá about the power exercised by evil souls who had passed to the next world, recorded His answer as "There is no power exercised over the people by those evil souls that have passed away. There are, therefore, specific actions that Bahá’ís can take when confronted with kind of situation of which you write, but the principal way in which they can overcome them is to deepen themselves in the Teachings of Bahá’u’lláh so that they will come to recognize the lack of any true reality to such negative forces. Recognize that evil is negative and has no existence in its own In a letter dated 26 November 1939 written on behalf of the Guardian to an individual believer we find the following: 'Evil forces do take control of our life, but it is within our power to free ourselves from falling under their subjection. Those so-called force will prove but illusions and will be wiped out and exterminated. Then you will behold the marvellous effect they produce. Do not Bahá’u’lláh and ‘Abdu’l-Bahá warn us repeatedly of the spiritual infection of Covenant-breaking? In one of His Tablets, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá wrote: 'If you seek immunity from the sway of the forces of the contingent world, hang the 'Most Great Name' in your dwelling, wear the ring of the 'Most Great Name' on your finger, place the picture of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in your home and always recite the prayers that I have written. that does not mean that there is no power in evil.
